Being seen and known for who you really are, being truly close with another, means you could get hurt. Really hurt.
You know this… because there’s been a lot of damage in the past, a lot of wounding, and those wounds come up when you try to be intimate because they haven’t fully healed.
When you don’t open, there’s no chance for intimacy to be there
… but you yearn for it.
The thing is, when emotional intimacy isn’t there, then the deepest sexual intimacy cannot unfold.
And you already know that getting emotionally close is vulnerable.

It’s vulnerable. And it’s scary.
​

You have plenty of evidence from your past experiences and you don’t feel safe with men.
You don’t trust men anymore.
Even worse, you don’t trust yourself anymore.

You start believing things like…
​
I can't really be myself with a lover. If I really opened myself to someone, if I really let them get close, they might reject me or abandon me.
I’m invisible to men, I’m somehow not enough... not beautiful enough, thin enough, or young enough.
​
Now that I’m middle aged, I’m losing my attractiveness.
I'm too idealistic about love… maybe I am looking for some unattainable thing that doesn't really exist.
Maybe relational love isn’t actually safe.
The masculine can’t be trusted.
You wish you could erase the past and have a do-over. You wish you could have done it better when you were younger. You wish you’d had a father you could rely on who showed you the best of a man so you could have the best kind of man now.

You begin feeling like you can’t protect yourself when it comes to intimacy, that you can’t hold your own boundaries.
​
You’ve realized that you betray yourself when it comes to sexuality.
​
You’re afraid that you’ll betray yourself… again.​
In Relationships ~
​
Your right to express your own desires falls away when you’re in a relationship with somebody else. You start feeling like you’re performing, and become hyper-aware of how you’re being perceived rather than feeling your own pleasure.

Somewhere deep down, you believe your desires aren’t worth as much as your partner’s. Sex becomes about pleasing the other so much that it prevents you from prioritizing your desires. And that gets in the way of coming into a truly authentic sexual experience.
In Dating ~
You tell yourself you’re available, but you’re not actually available.
You’re unsure if you can find the kind of depth that you desire in another person or the kind of presence you require for you to open to another, so you stay closed off or just give up.
You worry that the yearning or vision that you’ve held for so long can't actually exist in mundane, everyday life with another person.
And… as much as you would like to have intimacy and sexual experiences with a partner, you feel resistant because of the deep heartbreak and mistrust you’re still trying to work through.
Sexually ~

You don’t have access to your own sexuality, your own sexual stream… you don’t know how to access it even to the point that it can feel like it’s been hijacked.
Your pleasure is like a mirrored pleasure: you turn a guy on, and that turns you on, but you don't get turned on in and of yourself.
You are aware of the internalized male gaze that you hold for your own body… you have to meet certain standards, to look certain ways… and that keeps you disconnected from feeling the pleasures available in your body.
You only reach orgasm on your own or with toys, if at all. Orgasm through pure interaction with another person has been out of reach.
